Leaving a Legacy- Jon Lau

Can concrete float? Why yes, it can! The University of Nevada, Reno Concrete Canoe challenged teams from all over the nation this past weekend. I’m proud to say we took home first place in the co-ed division and 4th place overall. This was such a great way to end my college career!

Now making a concrete canoe is not as easy as we make it look. The concrete has to be lighter than water, but making it too light degrades the strength of the concrete. You have to make it strong enough but not too heavy, so you have to learn the properties of concrete to get it to do what you want it to do. That’s science!

Once we had the canoe it was practice, practice, practice! We were scored on the structure, paddling, technical paper and oral presentation. Not only did we have to look the part, but talk it. Overall it was a great experience and I’m so happy to be able to share it with my friends and family. Can’t wait to see what my alma mater does next year.
